Five Foot Nine

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Wonderful, fresh music is on tap for you today! Music that will make your toes tap–all of them. Music that springs to life and brings feeling to you. Music that is done by Five Foot Nine (but they stand closer to ten feel tall in our book).

Five Foot Nine is fronted by Michael Hushel, and features the talents of Jason Batchko, Tom Szidon and some sizzling vocals by Laura Coleman (and she has a beautiful voice, to be sure!). The songwriting is solid; the performances are tight, crisp and a very awesome listen. In fact, their self titled album, Five Foot Nine, presents ten tracks of wonder; the front portion of the album is an especially good listen.

We’re featuring the track Sugar from that album, as well as the tune I Was In Pictures (and a good part of our decision was that Laura’s voice shines on this track, which is extremely well written by Michael). Five Foot Nine is not shy at all about using handclaps, horns, cellos, and even a steel guitar (which you’ll hear on Sugar) to create their sound, and they blend it all together into a great album.

If you’re anywhere around Five Foot Nine, be sure to check them out.

As always,
Enjoy!

Naked Eyes

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Where to start with this one? Naked Eyes was hot, hot and hot in the early 80’s with their cover of Alway Something There To Remind Me (penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David). Of course, having a nifty video that saw a tone of airplay on MTV didn’t hurt, either, when it comes to it. After just tearing it up for a couple of years, Naked Eyes looked like they were here to stay.

That didn’t happen, though. In fact, the duo of Pete Byrne and Rob Fischer didn’t really make it past their third album, and that was that.

They did put out some other hits besides Always Something There To Remind Me (even though it is a cover and we seldom run covers), though, and we’re adding them in as well for you! So, we’ve put in Voices In My Head, Fortune And Fame, In The Name Of Love and, of course, Promises, Promises. We sourced from the album The Best Of Naked Eyes which provides a nice quick (and affordable) jumpstart into your Naked Eyes collection.

So, close your eyes to imagine the video, and enjoy the tunes!

As always,
Enjoy!

Marcy Playground

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

We’re expanding our Marcy Playground offerings for you today!

We’ve dug deeper into their debut album (called, oddly enough, Marcy Playground) which has a couple more tracks for you: Saint Joe On The School Bus and One More Suicide.

Marcy Playground has the wonderful post-grunge alternative-pop (gee…how many words can we throw at that description?) kind of sound that is compelling to us. But in truth, we were looking at the playlist this morning and noting to ourselves that Sex And Candy looked kind of lonely, and we can’t have that now, can we? Looking at it now, it doesn’t seem quite so lonely and that is a good thing indeed.

Oh? Their odd name? Well, OK…here then, to fill your trivia hunger: Marcy Playground came about because John Wozniak attended an experimental elementary school called Marcy Open School. During his time there, he was intimidated (according to an early biography on the band) by his classmates on the playground… and he took this difficult time of his life forward into his music. Hence, Marcy Playground. Ah, now that’s making something of early experiences!

As always,
Enjoy!

Eve 6

Friday, October 19th, 2007

So, we’re all over the map lately with what we are adding to the playlist–we’re keeping that up today with the addition of Eve 6 today. We’re on a roll rounding out some edges of our playlist and since we like the tune Inside Out, well, why not add it? And, well, you know us… why stop at just one tune?

From their Eve 6 album, then, we’ve added Inside Out, Small Town Trap and Showerhead. This is a fine album by a fine group of young rockers… sure, they float the edges of pop, but there are some serious hard rock (reminiscent of the 70’s) undertones in here too. Eve 6 has that certain something we are looking for.

And speaking of… if you have a suggestion for our playlist, or know of an artist we need to be running, please be sure to let us know!

We’ve done our part, now it is time for you to do yours and turn up the volume!

As always,
Enjoy!

Lifehouse

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

We’ve added some Lifehouse (their site starts with a splash page that plays music, just so you know) into our playlist today. From their eponymous third album, Lifehouse (which doesn’t sound anything at all like their first two albums, but does sound exactly like what we love to run), we’re adding in You And Me, Come Back Down and Chapter One.

Lifehouse is an interesting group, and on this album they reinvent themselves with acoustic guitars and such. It’s a “nice” album, radio friendly and all that (not that being radio friendly is our criteria for adding it: frankly, the only thing we care about is if we like it. We are, after all a “radio free” station!). In any event, we think this is right up our alley, and so it goes.

As always,
Enjoy!

Bad Company (and one more Roger Waters track)

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Thanks to a wonderful listener suggestion, we’ve decided to round out out Bad Company offerings a little bit more. We have long been running Feel Like Makin’ Love, but at just one Bad Company song, well, that just wasn’t right. So, we’ve added a few more selections for you today, and now it is much better.

From their nice compilation album 10 From 6 (which, as the title suggests, gathers 10 tunes from six albums. All in all, this is a nice, but not complete, sampler of Bad Company. If you like them, but don’t have these six albums, this is a good place to start) we’ve added in Ready For Love, Shooting Star, Bad Company (of course!), Can’t Get Enough and Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy.

And, also by listener suggestion, we’ve also decided to sneak in Welcome To The Machine as performed by Rogers Waters on his In The Flesh album. Although we know, of course, this is a Pink Floyd tune (from Wish You Were Here), we like the live version as Roger did it, and so decided to run this one.

Ah… so many tunes to play for you. So little time… but rest assured, we have so much more music to add! Stay tuned to Radio Free David!

As always,
Enjoy,

Live Three Legged Fox

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

WooHoo! LIVE music! And by now, you know that we are a total and complete sucker for live music.

Three Legged Fox sent along a copy of their live album Live @ Grapestreet 6.9.07 recorded at, well, Grapestreet in Philadelphia on (you guessed it) June 9, 2007. All in all this a fine recording and it has a wonderful sonic punch to it that just brings home the atmosphere of the event. If you close your eyes you can more than easily imagine being there (and wishing you were, too) as Kyle, Eric, Mike and Kory take you through a well constructed set. They move through their material nicely, adding to it and even tossing in some new songs as well… so, for those of us who couldn’t be there, this is definitely the next best thing. You can pick up this gem from them on their MySpace page, and we certainly encourage you to support them.

Three Legged Fox is also cool enough to post some pictures of the event on their MySpace page, so you can see what it was all about as you listen to these tunes. Oh! And speaking of… we replaced our studio version of I Am with the new live one, and added in Don’t Just Be.

Three Legged Fox is certainly someone to keep your eye on. And we’ll be keeping our ear open for more live music for you.

As always,
Enjoy!

Pinhead

Friday, October 12th, 2007

There, in Los Angeles, in places like The Glasshouse, 51 Buckingham, and The Press in Claremont you’ll find them playing for the love of music… Pherber Jones, Paul Bayze, David Quintanar and Eric Ruelas belting out some great tunes… and yes, you’ll be watching Pinhead.

Pinhead is about ready to jump up onto the national stage, and they’ve released a new EP (which we are oh so happy to have our hands on!) called Surfing The Afterlife. We’re running the cut Cabin Fever from and it, and like the way it sounds. It’s got that certain…something… about it which makes it a fun, enjoyable and great listen.

Remember when Pinhead goes big that you heard them here on Radio Free David! They’re playing California now, but with music this good, they’ll be moving across the country in no time at all. Let’s keep on eye on Pinhead!

As always,
Enjoy!

The Bastard Fairies

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Due to popular demand, we’re revisiting The Bastard Fairies today and adding in another way cool cut of theirs! From their Memento Mori album we’re adding in A Venomous Tale which is a wonderfully interesting number.

And a whole lot of folks agree that The Bastard Fairies are something hot. As of this writing, they have received 1.8 million (yes, Million) YouTube views, which is something.

But The Bastard Fairies also really (as in really) “get it”. If you were to happen to visit their website (for example, here: http://www.thebastardfairies.com) you will discover that they are offering the way cool album Memento Mori for download. Notice that we didn’t name a price… and that’s because there isn’t one. Download it, and enjoy it. The actual physical album (which we like a lot, by the way) has some bonus tracks on it, so you can have the best of all worlds.

If you haven’t already done so, check out The Bastard Fairies, and in the meantime, enjoy A Venomous Tale right here on Radio Free David.

As always,
Enjoy!

Maroon 5

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Are they rock? Are they pop? Are they something else? We don’t know, and we don’t care… why? Because we know we like their music and that is good enough for us!

We’ve gone back to the archives today and pulled out the quintessential album Songs About Jane, which is one that we particularly like. As it happens, we’ve been running some nice acoustic versions of Harder To Breathe and She Will Be Loved (and we’re going to keep those in our playlist, of course). But, we’ll add in one more gem from this album today: This Love. Whatever their style, we like ‘em and we’re happy to have more of them in our playlist.

As always,
Enjoy!
