1888

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Hampton Roads. Just the very name conjures up all sorts of images. But, no matter what you picture in your mind as you read that name, don’t forget that some pretty nice music is turned out from there, too. Specifically, the group 1888 is from there, and specifically, they are now in our playlist.

Actually, truth be told, they sent along their newest album, Honey, I’d Kill… to us much earlier this year, but thanks to our more than amazing filing system (ahem), we just realized we hadn’t actually gotten them on the air. Until now, that is. In any event, they are more than worth the wait!

1888 has been cranking out the tunes for a good long while now, but this effort is certainly their best one so far. We’re happy to add Unconscious On The Telephone and I Don’t Think into our playlist and now we can all rock along with their solid beats, excellent guitar work and wonderful musicianship. Oh yeah!

As always,
Enjoy!

Mexico 70

Friday, October 5th, 2007

Every now and then someone comes along that almost defies description and categorization. Notorious Liz sent along just such an artist: Mexico 70 and their latest release Thirty Five Whirlpools Below Sound.

Mexico 70 (featuring lead vocalist and songwriter Mick Bund) has been around for a good long while, cranking out music in the mid 90’s (and before) all the way through today. In this release, Mexico 70 continues with some wonderful efforts. The problem, of course, is what to call these tunes. Are they rock? Maybe. Pop? Maybe. Shoegaze? Maybe. British Indy? Maybe. All of the above? That’s probably closer to the mark, really. But in any event, we’re not really concerned with how to label a tune as much as how good it sounds to us.

And there are some tunes that sound good to us on this album! The lead off track, Hello Hello is catchy and draws you into the album nicely. We’ve also added the wonderfully snarky Mr. Magpie and the haunting Bomb Poem. Bomb Poem is an interesting tune for us, as it’s entire point of view is one of a bomb falling. On the surface, the tune is something you might hear in the background and think “oh, that’s nice”… but that’s not what the song is about at all. We’ve included it because we like it, but also because it makes a statement. Mick Bund took the time to record his view, and we’ll air that view here.

So, welcome Mexico 70 to our playlist… they provide a nice mix for us.

As always,
Enjoy!

Jewel

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

And how can we forget about Jewel?

We’ve decided today to mix it up a little bit and add in couple of tracks from Jewel’s This Way album. After all, we don’t have her in our playlist yet, and it is time to remedy that!

This Way is her third album (hey, if Star Wars can start in the middle, so can we…) and a fine album it is. This Way brings us some wonderful alternative folk pop rock (how’s that for mixing genres?), but however you define it, it is darn good listening. We’ve added Standing Still, Break Me and Everybody Needs Someone Sometime.

What? You’re happy with these selections, but wish you had another one? Well… your wish is but our command! Just for you (sssh… don’t tell anyone) we’ve added a live (yes, live!) version of her ever popular Who Will Save Your Soul from the Saturday Night Live: 25 Years, Vol 1. album.

What? You’re still wishing for more Jewel? Well, well, well… we can see that we have a most discriminating listener here, now don’t we? And you like Saturday Night Live, but there are other late night programs you like, too? Luckily for you we have just the ticket… yup! More Jewel! This time, we’ll source from the Live On Letterman: Music From The Late Show album which has a nice rendition of You Were Meant For Me (and best of all, Flea helps out on this one).

So there you go. Lots of Jewel today!
As always,
Enjoy!

Nirvana

Monday, October 1st, 2007

This is our 100th blog posting… wow. Thank you so much for reading (and listening) to Radio Free David. We might be at 100 postings, but we sure have more to come. Our queue of new music is more than full. However, where else are you going to get music that ranges from Kings Of Convenience to today’s selection? We pride ourselves on our diversity and wide ranging styles.
Earlier we said that we weren’t done with Dave Grohl, and today we fulfill that promise with a bunch of Nirvana. From the smoking hot Nevermind album, we’ve added five of the best cuts, including Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Drain You, Lithium and Polly. We love the raw sound of Nirvana and think this is a breakthrough album. How can we not run a whole bunch of cuts from it?

As always,
Enjoy!
