Steely Dan

Friday, November 30th, 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Ah, it’s Friday and we’re in just “that sort of mood” today… you know, the kind of mood where we reach for our Steely Dan albums to spin them. Looking through our playlist, we realized that we could certainly use some more of their tunes, so… why not add them for you?

We’re picking up Black Cow and Peg from their wonderful Aja album to go along with the cuts we already from there.

As long as we’re at it, we also decided today was a great day to add in Hey Nineteen and Do It Again from their very nice compilation album A Decade Of Steely Dan.

Oh yeah… NOW it feels like a Friday.

As always,
Enjoy!

Pink Floyd

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

We’re always good to add a little bit more Pink Floyd to our playlist. Today we’re sourcing from their Animals album. This is an unusual album in that it might be hard for the casual listener to get into, what with it’s extended pieces and all. It isn’t exactly (or even, for that matter) radio friendly. But, we have a word for this album and that word is

“perfect”

So, we’re adding in two cuts: Pigs (Three Different Ones) and Sheep; together they clock in at over 20 minutes, but as you know, that is never a problem here on Radio Free David.

As always,
Enjoy!

Counting Crows

Friday, November 16th, 2007

We’re adding in some more Counting Crows today. After all, it is almost December, and that made us think of their tune A Long December, and so why not?

A Long December is from their second album Recovering The Satellites, of course, and we’re more than happy to have it in our rotation. However, since we were there, we also added in Goodnight Elisabeth and Daylight Fading from that album. As a sophomore effort, we like this one and think the album on the whole is pretty good.

Of course, now that we’re in a Counting Crows mood, we went back to August And Everything After to pick up Rain King. Hey, we do it all for you!

Oh, OK. Still not completely satisfied? Fine, fine… ONE more, and that’s it for you!

From their early years, we’ve added in Einstein On The Beach (For An Eggman). This quirky number charted out at #1 back in 1994. We found the original release of it on the compilation album DGC Rarities, so we’ve added it from that source (rather than the later Counting Crows compilation album Films About Ghosts. Why? Because we are in just that kind of mood today!)

As always,
Enjoy!

Cowboy Junkies

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Start with a way cool place with some awesome acoustics. Add in a bunch of talented musicians just beginning to come into their own. Give them one night and a DAT recorder. Shut the doors and turn them loose. Stop by much later to pick up the recording, press it onto a CD, and, well, we’ve just described The Trinity Session by The Cowboy Junkies.

Recorded in one session at the Holy Trinity in Toronto on November 27, 1987 this is a simply stellar recording. It is raw, gritty, full of emotion and the entire recording is an absolute gem, with musical styles ranging all over the map. As you can imagine, we are drawn to this like moths to a flame and we absolutely had to run some cuts from it for you. We’ve picked the traditional Mining For Gold as well as their tune Misguided Angel.

All in all, this is a great album for your collection, although don’t expect to find a whole lot of uptempo stuff here. In fact, some of it is played so slowly that you’ll wonder how anyone could play that slow… still, on the whole, this is an unusual recording by a group just before they broke through into the mainstream. If you happen to see a copy, be sure to snag it!

As always,
Enjoy!

Digby

Friday, November 9th, 2007

Ah, Digby.

These guys have been around for a little while, and have seen their share of ups and downs. They’ve been out on tour, extensively, and that tour took a toll on them personally. A lot of artists would have called it a day. Not (luckily for us!) Digby. Instead, they dug deep and out popped a new EP: What’s Not Plastic?

This is a very, very nice EP (and you can download it!) full of depth and passion. We’ve selected two cuts from it, Self Evaluation and Knocking At Your Door for your listening pleasure. We really applaud what Digby is doing (did you check out that download yet? Go ahead. We’ll wait. This is something you want to do!) and how they are going about it. We think their music is absolutely superb and we are now an ardent supporter of them.

And you ought to be as well.

As always,
Enjoy!

Caveman

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

We’re happy to bring in our newest addition to our playlist today: Caveman. We like to describe our artists to you, but that is exceptionally difficult in this case. Why? Well, because their sound is so darn unique. Part rock. With electronic influences. Wtih industrial influences. Sample. Awesome vocals and harmonies. A sound for the ages, yet defines any age put to it. We like the energy they bring, though, and we like their sound.

Caveman are Kfir Basson (vocals and guitars), Shay Raviv (keyboards/programing), Bright Light (guitars), Barak Kram (drums) and Ido Hershkovich (Dodo) (bass).

From their debut album, Dirty Faces Clean Hearts we running the cut Sinner’s Grove. We think you’re going to like it!

As always,
Enjoy!

Countess Of Persia

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Talk about fresh new music on fresh new labels… and you would be talking about Countess Of Persia and Parrot On A Porch Records, and naturally, we’ve got you covered today (thanks to Notorious Liz)!

Countess Of Persia (who is Ricky Harnden, Vaughn O’Loughlin and Richie Maletta), hailing from Kingston, New York, has just come out with their debut album Super Battle Birthday Cake. We’re running two cuts from it, I Count The Miles and the delightful Charlie & Me (and once you hear this, you’ll know why it ended up in our rotation). As for Parrot On A Porch Records, Dan Coutant and Craig DeNoyelles saw a Countess Of Persia show and decided to put together a label to support them. That certainly says something about these guys, for sure!

Anyway, we’re pleased to welcome them into our rotation and love the sound and mix they bring to us. Somehow, I don’t think this is the last we’ve heard from them, either.

As always,
Enjoy!
